Nobody wants to deal with a flat tire, but it does happen to drivers every day. Thankfully, with the right Mazda service tips and preparation, you can deal with a flat tire in no time. As part of our MAZDA Service Tips series at Peruzzi Mazda, here’s what you should do when you get a flat tire.

Pull Over Safely

The first thing to do if you get a flat tire is to pull over safely as soon as possible. Whether you’re in the city or on a highway, turn on your emergency lights and move your car over to a clear and safe spot.

Assess the Tire

Once you’ve safely exited your vehicle, it’s time to check your tires to find the issue. You may be able to see what punctured your tire just by looking at it. Don’t remove the object in question, as doing so may cause more damage.

Install Your Spare Tire

If you have the materials to change the tire and apply the spare, it’s recommended that you do so while pulled over. You’ll need the spare tire, a lug wrench, and a jack – all of which should be kept in your car at all times. Typically, they’re found under the floorboard of your trunk. If you don’t have these materials or can’t remove the tire for whatever reason, it’s best to contact roadside assistance, who can install your spare tire.

Schedule a Service Visit

You shouldn’t drive for more than 50 miles on a spare tire. As soon as you’re able, set up a Mazda service appointment to have your tire repaired or a new one installed so you can get back on the road with confidence.
