What is a plug-in hybrid? How does one deal with range anxiety? How do you charge an electric battery? With the growing popularity of electric cars, lots of car shoppers have been asking themselves questions like these of late. With glossary of hybrid and EV terms, Peruzzi Mazda is happy to give you a head-start on the buying process.

EV: stands for “electric vehicle” and is an umbrella term that describes any car that doesn’t run on gasoline alone. 

ICE: this means “internal combustion engine. While there is a nice selection of traditional gas-powered models at our Fairless Hills, PA Mazda dealership, EV shoppers will be interested in a completely different set of automobiles.

Hybrid: the term “hybrid” applies to any EV that uses a combination of an ICE and an electric motor. For a long time, hybrids have been the most common type EVs, but that’s beginning to change with rising interest in other types of electrically powered automobiles.

PHEV: one type of EV that’s becoming very popular is the PHEV, or plug-in hybrid electrical vehicle. These vehicles are similar to hybrids, except that PHEVs have a bigger battery that must be charged via a household wall socket or home charging station. PHEVs are not only powerful, but they also offer all-electric driving for a certain number of miles.

Charging Level: there are three charging levels associated with the EV market. Level 1 is associated with charging the EV’s battery in a standard 120V household outlet. It’s the slowest level of charging. Level 2 charging comes by way of a charging station installed in the EV owner’s home. This level is considerably faster than Level 1. As for Level 3, you’ll only find it at public fast-charging stations. This is the most powerful form of charging, capable of recharging a battery to 80% capacity in around 30 minutes.

Fully Electric Vehicle: a fully electric vehicle is one that runs entirely on electricity, with no gas engine in sight. If you want maximum efficiency and minimal Mazda service obligations, this is the EV for you.
