What Do Engine Cylinders Do?
Engine cylinders are the power units of an engine. This is where fuel is burned and turned into mechanical energy, which powers your car.
Engine cylinders are made of metal and are sealed tight inside of an engine. They house pistons that are responsible for compressing fuel, which results in ignition and combustion.
You’ve probably heard of engine cylinders referred to with numbers, such as four, six, and eight. These numbers reflect the number of cylinders inside an engine; the more cylinders that are present, the higher the power output will be.
Cylinders that are positioned in a straight line indicate that an engine is “inline,” whereas six or more cylinders might be referred to as a “V” engine because of the V-shape in which they are arranged.
Why You Need Engine Cylinders
If an engine cylinder is not working efficiently, you can get various bad results. Overheating, leaking, or misfiring are obvious problems which can cause extreme harm to your engine. Luckily, if any of these issues occur, it will usually trigger your “Check Engine” light to come on.
