There’s a lot of confusion around electric cars. Part of that is due to the many different types of electrified vehicles. Fully-electric vehicles do not require a Mazda oil change, but they do have other required maintenance tasks. Let’s review the service needs of electrified vehicles.
Electric vs. Hybrid Service Needs
An electric vehicle doesn’t need engine oil because it is powered by an electric motor, not a gas engine. In general, electric vehicles don’t require as much maintenance as gas vehicles because they have fewer moving components.
Hybrid cars, however, do have a gasoline engine to go along with their battery. In that case, it’s crucial to make sure you regularly change your engine oil. The same rules apply as if you drove a regular gas-powered car. Change your oil every three months, or 3,000 miles. If you use synthetic motor oil, you can change your oil around every 7,500 miles.
Other Maintenance
Just because an electric vehicle eliminates the need for oil changes doesn’t mean it will run forever without regular checkups. There are a number of components to keep track of, such as the tires, cabin air filter, windshield washer fluid, and wiper blades.
Most warranties also require regular inspections, even if they don’t include oil changes. It’s best to keep the same schedule as if you were going in for an oil change—about every 7,500 miles.
What to Do Now
If you drive a hybrid, there’s no question: keep a regular oil change schedule. If you drive a fully electric vehicle, make sure it also gets a regular checkup. Here at Peruzzi Mazda, our Mazda service center can make sure your vehicle is running in perfect shape.
