A Mazda lease can be a preferable option over buying for any number of reasons. However, you may find some of the terms to be limiting. Mileage caps can be particularly worrying if you drive a lot. Here are some tips to avoid the penalties that come with exceeding your mileage limit.

Do the Math and Plan Ahead

The single best way to avoid surpassing your lease’s mileage limit is to do some basic math and plan ahead. Here’s one way to do just that: take the mileage you drove in the last three years and divide it by 36. This monthly mileage average extrapolated to the lease length you are considering should be roughly similar. It might also help to add five percent or more if you expect more driving in your new Mazda car.

Consider a High-Mileage Lease

It may cost more, but if you opt for a high-mileage lease of say 15,000 or 18,000 miles, it could save you significantly more than the fees you could face if you go over. A typical lease may cap you out at 12,000 miles.

Negotiate a Buyout Clause

If you fear you may end up surpassing your mileage limit, one way to avoid penalties is to make sure you have the option to buy the vehicle at the end of the lease. Some buyout clauses can help avoid the penalties, or at least use those towards a down payment.
