The 2023 Mazda CX-30 or 2023 Suburu Crosstrek?

Subcompact SUVs are often heralded for their versatility and how easy they are to operate on crowded city streets. The 2023 Mazda CX-30 and the Subaru Crosstrek are two worthy entrants in the hotly competitive subcompact SUV class, and they both deserve your consideration. As competitive as the two rivals are, the Mazda CX-30 bests the Subaru SUV in some significant ways.

Driving Dynamics

New Mazda models are widely recognized for their engaging driving dynamics, something that can’t be said about Subaru cars. The Mazda CX-30 is available with two peppy engines. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is the SUV’s base powerplant, and it delivers 191 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. The SUV’s top trims rely on a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for power, and it comes through with 227 or 250 horsepower and 310 or 320 lb-ft of torque depending on the type of gas you use.

Similar to the Mazda CX-30, the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is offered with two engines. The vehicle’s base engine is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder unit that generates 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. A more powerful 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine powers the Sport and Limited trims, and it produces 176 lb-ft of torque and 182 horsepower.

Given the comparative strength of its engines, the Mazda CX-30 reaches highway speeds more easily than the Subaru Crosstrek. When you visit Peruzzi Mazda to test-drive the Mazda CX-30, you’ll quickly realize that the SUV has crisp steering, firm brakes, and the ability to absorb road imperfections without disturbing occupants.

Sadly, the Subaru Crosstrek lacks similar attributes, which makes the SUV a bit of a chore to operate under certain circumstances.

Active Safety Equipment

Our team of Mazda dealers is thrilled that the new Mazda CX-30 is outfitted with some impressive active safety features. The base Subaru Crosstrek trim relies on a manual transmission for gear changes, which limits its standard active safety equipment to a rearview camera unless you opt for the available continuously variable automatic transmission.

While the Mazda CX-30 has a rearview camera too, its base trim is also equipped with:

  • Drowsy driver monitor
  • Automatic high beams
  • Forward collision warning and intervention system
  • Lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Adaptive cruise control
